A Skeletal $300 Chair That Echoes a $300 Million Museum

Almost every museum has a gift shop where visitors can buy a knickknack to remember the time spent in front of a lovely Vermeer, but few galleries give patrons the ability to purchase furniture inspired by the building’s architecture. The National Museum of African American History and Culture, designed by David Adjaye, is a 420,000-square-foot project being built in the shadow of the Washington Monument at a cost of $309 million, but for just $300, fans of the British architect can own a chair inspired by it.

Furniture giant Knoll commissioned Adjaye and his 48-person office—which has completed commissions in Moscow, Oslo, and London—to design a collection of furniture inspired by the stunning, bronze-clad, Smithsonian affiliate. It consists of: The Washington Skin Nylon Chair ($300), the Washington Skeleton Aluminum Side Chair ($490), and the Washington Corona Bronze Coffee Table, which is being produced in a limited edition of 75 units ($50,000).

The strong angles and bold materials used in the construction of the National Museum of African American History and Culture serve as inspiration for a related line of furniture. Image: Adjaye Associates

The cantilevered legs follow similar lines of the building’s profile.

“I explored a number of themes in the Knoll furniture—such as monumentality, materiality and history—which are also evident in my architectural projects including the Washington building,” says Adjaye “So the formal languages do share a timeframe and a common inquiry.”

Adjaye started the process working on the plastic chair, but quickly realized that the distinct ribbing pattern, which helps the resin flow in an injection mold, would also make for an impressive die-cast aluminum design. “To be cost effective for both metal and plastic, we were limited to a two-part mold, which means that all the holes are cut in one direction,” he says. “That was a challenge for us at first because we wanted the ribbing to feel integral, not applied.” In the end, both designs have slightly different structures with limited variation in the number of ribs and their spacing. The chairs are minimal, but even the lightweight plastic chair can accommodate people who weigh 300 pounds.

The chairs have a distinct look that mimic the museum in subtle ways—the cantilevered legs follow similar lines of the building’s profile and the ribbing is inspired by African patterns which also adorn the metallic facade, but despite his passion for larger than life forms, Adjaye was always keenly aware of ergonomics. “The primary idea behind the design was to mimic the form of a seated person,” he says “The idea is that the chair almost disappears when in use.”

For a designer used to planning projects that will span a decade, the Washington Collection gave Adjaye the flexibility to focus on big ideas instead of ballooning budgets. “Rather than making a product, it was an opportunity to express my position in terms of materials, silhouettes and forms,” says Adjaye “It was like a testing ground for ideas that interest me”

Adjaye is no stranger to technical challenges, but required him to master a new set of materials, as well as price targets that would be rounding errors on his construction projects. “It is very different,” he says. “Furniture can be everywhere and used by everyone, unthinkingly in their daily lives—it is a background. There is something very powerful and very rewarding about that.”

The Corona table is a heavy piece, crafted out of slabs of bronze and glass, and carries a hefty price tag of $50,000. Photo: Knoll

The chairs are joined by the Corona Table, a $50,000 piece that is inspired by the bronze panels that will cover Adjaye’s museum when it is completed. Its four panels were cast in bronze, with the exterior revealing the sand cast texture while the internal face was CNC milled and polished to a mirror finish. “The contrast in the finish is an investigation into the relationship between inside and outside, public and private, exposing and concealing,” he says. “Many ideas which feed into my work more generally.”

Some architects famously reject small projects like furniture and even small homes, but Adjaye relishes the opportunity “The collection explores critical themes in my work—research, history, materiality—finding specific conditions, amplifying them and making them aesthetic while giving them the potential to be part of our world.”

GENEVA (AP) — Six world powers sat down with Iran for a closer look Wednesday at what Tehran is describing as a possible breakthrough deal that could lessen suspicions it is interested in nuclear arms and lead to the easing of sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

Iran says it is not interested in getting the bomb. Its proposal Tuesday to the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany focused on their demands that uranium enrichment and other activities that could be used to make nuclear arms be stopped or reduced.

No details were made public. But comments from Western officials meeting with Iranian negotiators indicated interest in the proposal, described by Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi as designed to allow Iran to leave the "dark" path of international isolation.

Iran's version of success is for painful international sanctions to be lifted in exchange for possible concessions it had been previously unwilling to consider, such as increased monitoring and scaling back of uranium enrichment — a potential path to nuclear arms and the centerpiece of the impasse with the West.

International talks designed to reduce fears that Iran may make such arms have been stalled for most of their 10-year history, with Tehran insisting it has no interest in weapons production, while resisting both enticements and sanctions designed to force it into ending uranium enrichment and other activities that could be used to make weapons.

But negotiations appear now to be driven by the new wind generated since reformist President Hassan Rouhani was elected in June.

Wednesday's meeting started several hours late, as the six powers discussed further steps among themselves before the talks resumed for a closer look at the proposal.

Asked for details beyond broad outlines made public by the Iranians ahead of the talks, a member of one of the delegations at the table said the plan offered reductions in both the levels of uranium enrichment being conducted by Iran and the number of centrifuges doing the enrichment — a key demand of the six powers.

An Iranian official said any plan would be implemented in three stages lasting from six months to a year. Both men demanded anonymity because they were not allowed to discuss the confidential plan.

Iran's state TV, which closely reflects government views, said Tehran offered to discuss uranium enrichment levels. The report also said Iran proposed adopting the additional protocols of the U.N.'s nuclear treaty — effectively opening its nuclear facilities to wider inspection and monitoring — if the West recognizes Iran's right to enrich uranium.

But the Iranian official said any acceptance of the protocols would be one of the last steps in implementing the plan.

Kandi Burruss on Kim Zolciak "Tardy for the Party" Lawsuit: "She Really Didn't Win"

Don't be tardy for the next court date! Kandi Burruss tells Us Weekly that her legal battle with Kim Zolciak over their 2009 song "Tardy for the Party" isn't over yet.

On Saturday, Oct. 12, The Wrap reported that a judge at the United States District Court in the Northern District of Georgia ruled in favor of Zolciak in Burruss' lawsuit against her former Real Housewives of Atlanta costar. But the 37-year-old singer-songwriter and record producer tells Us she's not dropping her case yet. "Kim really didn't win. That was just one level of it," she explains. "Now it goes back to other levels of the court and it's still going on."

PHOTOS: Stars at court

Burruss sued Zolciak, 35, in March for profits made from the sale of the song, claiming the track was sold "without [the] plaintiffs' authorization, license or consent." Zolciak responded by filing legal documents of her own, accusing Burruss of filing the lawsuit to promote her now-canceled show The Kandi Show.

"It's just the principal of it at this point," the Grammy winner tells Us of the ongoing lawsuit. "It's not about the money. I'm doing great otherwise. It's all just silly. It's not a big deal to me. I've got my daughter and my fiance and am working on new music and a Broadway show that I will star in! So it's all good."

Indeed, on Oct. 10 she shared on Instagram that her upcoming Atlanta-based play has a premiere date. "I'm so excited!!! My new stage play Kandi Burruss and Todd Tucker Presents: A Mother's Love is coming to The Rialto Theatre in Atlanta November 22-24, 2013," she wrote. "It stars Eddie Levert Shirley Murdock D. Woods Q. Parker Chandra Currelley myself and more to be announced. Everyone is going to be there so you should be also! Tickets Available October 15, 2013! Please spread the word!"

PHOTOS: Biggest Real Housewives fights ever

Back in September, Burruss said she was working on music for the show. "I'm creating songs for my play. I can't wait to hear the voices of the people we casted on the songs," she shared. "I hear so much in my head but I can't play an instrument. So I'm singing a full out song with harmonies & all to just a click track. I'll have a musician come play to what I wrote later but I need to put this idea down now. I love what I do! You would be amazed at what I can do with no music."

It's time for your Friday week in review, a look at the big headlines and conversation in the tech and culture space.

ICYMI

On the air, we continued to follow the ongoing failures of websites designed to sign people up for the new health insurance exchanges. I chatted with All Things Considered about how an old technology — pen and paper — is what a lot of folks are turning to in light of repeated issues with trying to sign up online. (The folks at Reason magazine say we have no idea when the problems will be fixed.) Steve Henn looked at how Silicon Valley may have been able to do the job much better than the tech contractors who built the healthcare.gov behemoth.

Also this week, Steve introduced us to new technology that gives parents a better way to track their teen drivers. On the blog, our pals at Turnstyle featured an innovative Indian man who is helping women in rural areas with his maxi pad machine, and our weekly innovation pick was a USB charger that's powered by fire.

The Big Conversations

Tech companies are business titans, and this week Apple's hire of Burberry CEO Angela Ahrendts as the tech giant's new retail chief signaled the company's interest in fast growth in Asia. As Twitter readies for its IPO, it continues to roll out changes to user capabilities and its platform. This week, it announced a change to who can send you direct messages (it's no longer only people you follow). And more revelations about the scope of NSA surveillance — The Washington Post reported that the NSA is collecting hundreds of millions of email and instant messaging contact lists. The New Yorker explained why these stories are troubling.

Other Curiosities

Vice: Online Booksellers Are Increasingly Afraid of Selling Smut

The dark corner of the Amazon Kindle store gets some attention.

The Atlantic: Someone Has Solved The Supreme Court's Angry Email Problem

Good ol' pen and paper seems to be a theme, eh? At the Supreme Court, justices avoid firing off angry emails with their innovative system: only handwritten memos.

Finally, your blogger is on the road today, in Atlanta with 1,200 other journalists, technologists and educators for the Online News Association annual confab. The conversations here focus heavily on the tech-powered reporting and distribution methods that are changing the game for traditional journalism — data, mobile and networks. "2014 is about anticipatory computing revolution for the masses," predicts digital strategist Amy Webb, who spoke Friday morning about how predictive elements like Google Now and smart virtual personal assistants are taking over. Nieman Journalism Lab at Harvard will be covering other big themes to emerge from here. Stay tuned.

Iolo System Mechanic 12

If your PC isn't motoring along at the same speed as it did when you first powered it on, you'd do well to invest in Iolo System Mechanic 12. The multi-faceted utility suite turns back the clock on worn machines by repairing the registry, defragging the hard drive, and monitoring system threats. All in all, Iolo System Mechanic remains a very solid, effective PC tune-up suite that offers informative, easy-to-understand help about the problems that plague computers, but the PCMag.com Editors' Choice award-winning SlimWare Utilities Slimcleaner scrubbed our test bed with slightly better results (and it doesn't cost a dime).

Set Up and Interface
Iolo System Mechanic 12 is compatible with all PCs running Windows XP and higher, including Windows 8.1. Unlike most PC tune-up utilities, such as PC Tools Performance Toolkit, which limit you to three licenses, Iolo System Mechanic 12 lets you install the software on any number of computers, provided that it's not for business purposes. This is a welcome feature in the age of the multi-PC household.

The interface (one that's more streamlined than SlimCleaner's) will look very familiar to anyone who's used Iolo System Mechanic 12. Like the previous version of System Mechanic, this version has several options in the left pane (Dashboard, ActiveCare, Internet Security, Toolbox, Reports) that have their own individual tool sub-categories that let you run specific apps.

Iolo System Mechanic 12 also installs a useful widget on the desktop that gives you at-a-glance PC health and security readings. From this widget, you can run a system scan to determine your computer's health, or launch any number of Iolo System Mechanic 12's features to begin the clean up process.

The Clean Up Process
The Overview screen opens by default when the program is launched, and it's here that the "Analyze Now" button lives. Clicking the arrow next to it opened drop-down box that presented two choices: "Perform Quick Analysis" and "Perform Deep Analysis." The former is a one- to two-minute scan that looks for the most common PC problems; the latter is a five- to seven-minute scan that checks for all problems. Considering the heavy use that our test laptop had received, I went with the second option. Approximately six minutes later it finished the scan and uncovered numerous problems on my testbed.

Iolo System Mechanic 12

Beneath the reading appeared a highlighted message: "Boost speed and stability by removing redundant programs with CRUDD Remover." CRUDD is Iolo's acronym for Commonly Redundant or Unnecessary Decelerators and Destabilizers—fancy talk for duplicate programs that clog your system. The idea behind the enhanced CRUDD Remover is to eliminate those extra programs as each application install theoretically slows your PC's performance a bit. After running CRUDD Remover, several problems were detected on the PC, which were explained in simple detail on the "Problems" screen.

What I found truly cool was that Iolo System Mechanic 12 didn't just serve up a number—it provided blurbs that explained why these problems negatively impact performance. I checked off the listed problems, clicked the "Repair All" button, and performed the required reboot. Performing another deep scan revealed that the problems were addressed.

I ran Iolo's Program Accelerator, which smartly re-aligns all of a program's dependent files on the hard drive. It's touted as being better than disk defragmenters, which can blindly compact and separate files even more. Program Accelerator took approximately 15 minutes to work its magic, and, when it was done, I discovered that it had re-aligned thousands of files and hundreds of file fragments. There are also a ton of other tools backed into the suite such as AcceleWrite (a new real-time feature that helps organize the way data is written to the PC's HDD or SSD), IntelliStatus (which displays RAM and hard drive information and serves up cleaning tools), and the new Stability Guard (a tool that proactively stops system threats using algorithms).

Google flies high -- but Motorola sinks further

The good news about Google in its third-quarter results aren't hard to find: The company beat analyst estimates for revenue and earnings per share. But there is bad news, and it hints at how the company's big mobile hardware investment may be a much longer-term proposition for a profit.

Nobody, save maybe for Google's competition, is complaining about the company's revenues: $14.89 billion total, $11.92 billion net, up 12 percent from Q3 2012. The projections were for $11.7 billion revenue, and a $10.36 EPS (for the latter, Google made $10.74). Small wonder Google's shares jumped some 5 percent in after-hours trading.

One sign of how Google's business could change up with the ongoing shift away from desktops and toward mobile devices, is the dropping cost-per-click, or CPC, rate. A metric that measures the average price for an ad, CPC fell 8 percent over last year, and 4 percent from Q2, even while paid clicks rose 26 percent year-over-year and went up 8 percent from Q2.

Carolina Milanesi, a research VP at Gartner, described these steady-rather-than-drastic changes as a consequence of the movement toward mobile ads, "where there is a reluctance to pay as much." On the other hand, "the main thing is that more users are clicking on the ads that Google is serving."

Some of that may be due to the recently launched Enhanced Campaigns ad system (courtesy of its acquisition of AdMob). But other hints of how that might be happening came during the quarterly analyst conference call, where Chief Business Officer Nikesh Arora talked about how localized product-listing ads (a major component of the mobile ad strategy) and the transition "from links to answers" has been playing out.

"We’re transitioning from links to answers," he said, referring to the way Google has been reworking its results via its Hummingbird tuneup, "and product-listing ads are part of that because they're a good experience for the user, especially on mobile devices." But he declined to comment "on how that will impact going forward."

If Google plans to continue making up in volume what it loses in individual sales, it may well be one of the few entities on the planet with the muscle and the means to do so.

But Motorola Mobility, the in-house hardware side of Google's mobile strategy, hasn't experienced a turnaround of its own. Instead, it's slid even further into the red, with a Q3 loss of $248 million. At least the dip wasn't as pronounced as in Q2, where Motorola lost $342 million. Total Q3 revenue: $1.18 billion, down from $1.78 billion last year.

The real question: Is anyone even surprised by such lackluster performance? Under Google's stewardship, Motorola hasn't differentiated itself except by being remarkably underwhelming in most every respect. The U.S.-made Moto X phones have stolen no thunder from the likes of Samsung's Galaxy S4, let alone the iPhone 5s, and its "Motomaker" customization system hasn't done much for sales either.

Milanesi's observation on this point was blunt: "It is hard to see what the advantage of having Moto is, considering the fact that they have lost close to $1 billion." But she also pointed out Google is "looking years ahead, not quarters ahead, a strategy that might make earnings analysis quite complex as we do not see the quick results on investments such as Moto."

On the analyst call, CFO Patrick Pichette reiterated a similar line: The company had a quality product in the Moto X, and it was still the early days for the new Motorola. How long those early days will go on is another story entirely -- especially with the mobile market fast becoming a settled field with Apple on top, Samsung under that, and everyone else far, far behind.

For Obama, budget fight has high stakes for agenda

(AP) — For President Barack Obama, the outcome of this week's fiscal fights with Republicans could have broad consequences for his stalled second-term agenda.

A favorable deal for the White House might give Obama an opening to marginalize the tea party Republicans who have tried to win concessions from him in order to reopen the government and raise the nation's debt ceiling. But if no agreement is reached by Thursday's debt limit deadline, Obama will become the first modern president to preside over a government default, a dubious distinction with potentially calamitous economic consequences that could consume the White House for the foreseeable future.

Another, perhaps more likely, option: Obama ends up signing short term bills that keep Washington in the never-ending cycle of deadline-driven budget battles. For Obama, that would mean fiscal issues would keep consuming the oxygen in the nation's capital at a time when he is already watching his window for passing significant domestic legislation close.

"It's a ticking clock," Julian Zelizer, a political historian at Princeton University, said of presidential second terms. "He's already into the red zone in terms of getting things done."

On Monday, Obama and Senate leaders indicated they were optimistic that an agreement might be at hand to prevent a national financial default and reopen the government after a two-week partial shutdown. Officials in both parties were discussing a proposal to raise the debt ceiling through the spring, as well as a shorter deal to fund the government for several weeks.

"There has been some progress on the Senate side, with Republicans recognizing it's not tenable, it's not smart, it's not good for the American people to let America default," Obama said.

The president had planned to meet with bipartisan congressional leaders Monday afternoon, but the talks were canceled. The move was seen as a sign that progress was being made in private negotiations on Capitol Hill. But even if the Senate can reach an agreement, the fate of the deal in the Republican-led House would be uncertain.

Even before Washington ground to a halt this month, Obama was struggling to score significant legislative victories in his second term. A push for stricter gun control laws collapsed in the Senate. An immigration reform bill did get through the Senate, but stalled in the House and the future of the landmark legislation is deeply uncertain. And there has been virtually no legislative progress on a host of other issues Obama pledged to tackle in his second term, including expanding early childhood education and raising the minimum wage.

Questions about Obama's political clout also deepened last month, when congressional lawmakers, including many Democrats, appeared on the brink of rejecting his request for approving military action against Syria. A last-minute diplomatic overture from Russia prevented Obama from having to hold a vote, saving him from what would have almost certainly been an embarrassing defeat.

But missteps by Republicans during the current budget fight have helped Obama regain his footing. Recent polls show GOP lawmakers bearing the brunt of the public's blame for the shutdown, including a new Washington Post-ABC News survey out Monday that showed 74 percent of Americans disapprove of the way Republicans in Congress have handled the issue, compared to 53 percent who disapprove of Obama's handling of it.

The tilting of responsibility toward Republicans has hardened the White House's resolve to make no concessions in exchange for Congress lifting the debt ceiling or reopening the government. After years of trying to compromise with the House GOP leadership, many Democrats see the current debate as an opportunity to finally weaken the chamber's far-right wing, perhaps clearing the way for progress on issues like immigration that have the support of many Republican moderates.

However, Democrats alone can't make that happen. It will require some cooperation from House Speaker John Boehner, the Ohio Republican who has largely backed the wishes of tea party-backed lawmakers during the shutdown and debt ceiling discussions. It's unclear whether Boehner will take a different approach after the matters are resolved, though his tactics will likely be colored by how House Republicans appear positioned for next year's midterm elections.

Republican strategist Dan Schnur said that even if some GOP lawmakers start tilting to the center after the current budget battles, the president will still face an uphill climb in getting big-ticket legislation done in the coming months.

"There are going to be so many hard feelings on every side that it's hard to see a great deal of productive legislation coming in the immediate aftermath," said Schnur, director of a political institute at the University of Southern California.

Review: Salt keeps server automation simple

October 17, 2013

Like Puppet, Chef, and Ansible, Salt is an open source server management and automation solution with commercial, officially supported options. Based on command-line-driven server and client services and utilities, Salt is primarily focused on Linux and Unix server management, though it offers significant Windows management capabilities as well. While Salt may look simple on its face, it's surprisingly powerful and extensible, and it has been designed to handle extremely large numbers of clients.

Salt uses a push method of communication with clients by default, though there's also a means to use SSH rather than locally installed clients. Using the default push method, the clients don't actively check in with a master server; rather, the master server reaches out to control or modify each client based on commands issued manually or through scheduling. But again, Salt can also operate in the other direction, with clients querying the master for updates. Salt functions asynchronously, and as such, it's very fast. It also incorporates an asynchronous file server for file deployments.

Orlando approves $1 billion airport expansion plan

By Barbara Liston

ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - Orlando's international airport authority approved a $1.1 billion improvement program, financed in part by $543.5 million in revenue bonds, to meet growing tourism industry demand linked to the area's theme parks.

"This community is exploding. We've got to be prepared for it because it's coming," Greater Orlando Airport Authority chairman Frank Kruppenbacher said on Thursday.

Passenger traffic at Orlando International, the 13th busiest airport in the nation, stands at 35 million, including 1.8 million international arrivals, according to GOAA executive director Phil Brown.

The bonds will be backed by general revenues derived from airport concessions, and by Federal Aviation Administration-approved passenger facility charges, according to the project budget.

Brown said requests for proposals will go out to investment bankers by the end of the year to ready the first $150-180 million issue for the first quarter of 2014.

The improvements include four additional international gates, upgrades to the ticket hall and baggage screening areas, an automated people mover, and a rail terminal to accommodate the announced All Aboard Florida, a privately financed initiative to provide train service between Orlando and Miami.

The work will bring annual passenger capacity to 45 million, according to the airport authority news release.

The current airport facility, originally designed to accommodate 24 million passengers annually, opened in phases beginning in 1981, a decade after the arrival of Walt Disney Co. turned Orlando into a worldwide tourist destination. Previous expansions occurred in 1991 and 2009, according to a GOAA timeline.

Passenger traffic is projected to exceed 40 million by 2016 when Disney opens its next big draw, a new themed section at the Animal Kingdom park based on director James Cameron's popular Avatar movie and planned sequels.

Additional visitors are being drawn by Orlando's fast-growing Medical City of hospital and research facilities in Lake Nona.

The new capital plan also includes a trigger to begin final design and construction of an additional $1 billion new terminal, for which financing details have not yet been established, once annual traffic reaches that 40 million passenger mark, including 2 million international arrivals.

The GOAA timeline projects the new terminal opening in 2019.

The Stealthy Barracuda UAV Is Germany's Future Flying Force

The Stealthy Barracuda UAV Is Germany's Future Flying ForceAfter the end of hostilities in WWII, France and Germany have become surprisingly close. The two nations are stalwart proponents of expanded European Union integration and are regularly referred to as the EU's "twin engine." But on the issue of unmanned aerial platform, the two simply cannot agree. So while France and its cohorts are developing the nEUROn, Germany is building the stealth Barracuda.

Ryan Murphy: "Glee" Will End After Sixth Season

It has been one of the most talked about television shows for the past four years, but unfortunately for the fans, "Glee" has announced that the sixth season of the singing sensation series will be the last.

During an event honoring the FX Network at the Paley Center on Wednesday (October 16), co-creator the series Ryan Murphy stated the show will not go beyond its sixth season and the loss of co-star Cory Monteith has forced him to think about an alternative ending of the show.

"The final year of the show, which will be next year, was designed around Rachel and Cory/Finn's story," Mr. Murphy explained. "I always knew that, I always knew how ti would end. I knew what the last show was, he was in it. I knew what the last line, she said it to him."

He continued, "So when a tragedy like that happens you sort of have to pause and figure out what you want to do, so we're figuring that out now."

Cory unexpectedly passed away this passed summer from an apparent overdose that involved morphine, codeine, and a metabolite of heroin. His girlfriend/co-star of the show Lea Michele continues her role as Rachel Berry.

The show honored him on last week's episode before going on hiatus for a couple weeks. The show will resume its fifth season on November 7th.

For GOP, the Damage Is Undeniable

The deal to open the government and raise the debt ceiling may be done, but the damage to the national Republican Party is considerable.

One GOP consultant — who clearly hails from the more conservative end of his party — didn’t hold back recently in slamming the “no compromise” conservatives who led House Republicans off the political cliff with a government shutdown and by flirting with a debt default.

You're GMing the wrong way!

Naw, I'm only kidding you're GMing the way that works for you.

I was talking to Viceversus and we figured it might be cool to get the ball rolling on a discussion between GMs about the way we tell our stories or play our games. Actually that's an interesting place to begin do you view yourself as helping to tell story or as an umpire in a game? I've always viewed RPing as a collaborative writing activity with no "winners" or "losers".

These days I run my RPs along the short story system, I don't know what it's really called that's just what I call it.

The basic idea is the GM creates a quest giver characters that supply the RPers with an objective, the RPers then write about how they achieve the objective in a single post. It works pretty well in small groups of RPers who like to write too much.the RPers explain how their character achieved or failed the mission and the GM writes about how their actions affect the world.

It's really good at certain things but is limited in other ways. For example it's great at character development, building a sense of a epic story quite quickly but it sucks at interactions between characters. It sucks so much at character interaction in my most recent RP I had include a sub RP just for the Characters to interact in.

So how do other GMs run their games? Is anyone doing anything different or outside of the norm they'd like to share?

Graffiti Artists Sue to Stop Housing That Will Level ... - AOL Real Estate

5pointz graffiti new york city

By Susanna Kim

Long before British graffiti artist Banksy and his air of mystery arrived in New York City this month, local street artists converged on a graffiti mecca in Queens to showcase their creations. But that mecca, known as 5Pointz, was slated to be razed to make way for luxury apartments. Lawyers are set to argue on Thursday in court after a group of 16 artists sued to preserve their street art.

A city block in the Queens neighborhood of Long Island City has grown into a popular tourist destination in New York over the past several years. It's even included in more than 100 international travel guides, with hundreds of tourists visiting in any given week, the lawsuit states. Artist Jonathan Cohen, who tags under the name Meres One, said the property owner has allowed aerosol artists to decorate the interior and exterior of the building's walls since 1993, according to a lawsuit filed on Oct. 10 with the U.S. District Court in Brooklyn. Until a court decides on the matter, oral arguments for a temporary injunction are set to take place Thursday to stop the destruction of the five-story building and surrounding area.

The owner, Gerald Wolkoff and his firm G&M Realty, want to make way for a 1,000-unit luxury apartment complex, the lawsuit claims. But Cohen and other artists are asserting in court that they have copyright ownership over their works under the Visual Artists Rights Act, or VARA, and copyright law. Wolkoff and G&M Realty did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

"We want the judge to stop the destruction of 5Pointz, which is tantamount to the Louvre for artists," said Roland Acevedo, a pro-bono attorney for Cohen and the artists. Acevedo said the artists are proposing to buy the property, which is viewed by thousands of commuters along the 7 subway train, at fair market value. Cohen said in court papers that some estimates of the property are around $40 million, though the landlord has claimed it is worth $200 million.

"I certainly understand that this is the United States and this country was founded on the concept of property ownership," Acevedo said. "We understand that he has a piece of valuable property that belongs to him and his family. No one is going to deprive him of that."

The owner had only three rules for 5Pointz: no religious art, no profanity and no pornography, court papers noted. Because the artists never signed a release with Wolkoff nor were paid for their work, they are claiming to retain all copyrights to their visual art. "The landlord could have protected his property rights to have them sign releases under VARA, but he didn't," Acevedo said.

The attorney said that the artists say they can raise the money to purchase the property. "The property is basically run down and needs a lot of work inside," Acevedo said. "It's not as if it's a valuable piece of property in and of itself. These artists are the ones who have maintained the property to fix stuff and make sure vandals don't get in. They're there all the time. They make sure things are locked. They give tours there. It's a phenomenal place."

Cohen, who could not be reached for comment, personally has more than 100 works of art on the exterior and interior walls of 5Pointz, some of which have copyright registration pending before the U.S. Copyright Office, the lawsuit claims.

Cohen said he has been a volunteer curator of the area since 2002, the lawsuit states, and the owner gave Cohen keys and "several secure spaces" to use as an office and to store cans of spray paint, ladders and other painting supplies. Cohen started a nonprofit corporation called 5Pointz Aerosol Arts Center Inc. with the website 5ptz.com. The group showcases the works of visual art at 5Pointz and "publicizes the free community events sponsored by 5Pointz," the lawsuit states.
Artists have traveled from Japan, Kazakhstan, Australia and Brazil for the opportunity to paint their works at 5Pointz, knowing that having their work at 5Pointz work "adds considerable prestige to an artist's reputation," the lawsuit states.

"You can't just come and paint on the walls," Acevedo said. "You have to go through Jonathan Cohen. He doesn't police it like a library. He's generous in giving permission." But you have to show Cohen a sketch of your proposed work.

Acevedo said the artists had considered moving the artwork to another location, but he said it would be difficult to take apart a stone concrete wall and stairwells from a five-story building. "This is not a canvas that can be easily moved," he said.

When asked if Cohen or any of the artists might demand financial compensation for their damaged visual work, Acevedo said it might be possible, given that VERA has statutory damages in the law that range from $750 to $150,000 per piece, if the damage is willful. "We are asking the court to enjoin the landlord from destroying any more pieces of works," Acevedo said. "They've damaged a number of works already. We've asked court to stop destruction of work and building until the court can hear and decide this matter."

'Non-Stop' Trailer: Liam Neeson Is a U.S. Air Marshal on a Hijacked Plane

Liam Neeson is tasked with hunting down a murderous and conniving plane hijacker in Non-Stop

The first claustrophobic trailer for Jaume Collet-Serra's thriller reveals at least one twist in the film and plenty of action reminiscent of Neeson's turn in the Taken franchise.

STORY: Liam Neeson's 'Taken 2' Paycheck: $10 Million

The star portrays a weary U.S. air marshal who receives an anonymous text from someone threatening to kill a passenger on the plane every 20 minutes unless a $150 million ransom is paid. Hints abound of a larger conspiracy in the works as Neeson searches for the culprit.

Julianne Moore, Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey) and Corey Stoll (House of Cards) also feature in the action title.

The film is set for release by Universal Pictures in February 2014.

The man who raised Adrian Peterson's 2-year-old son says he's sick and tired of people feeling sorry for the NFL star, claiming AP didn't care about the boy because he never got the chance to meet him.

We broke the story, AP only learned he was the biological dad a few months ago. Before the revelation, the child's mother was under the impression that the father was a man named Bobby Ruffin.

After the child passed away on Friday, Bobby went to his Facebook page and unloaded ... writing, "So tired of this poor Adrian Peterson sh*t. Let me blow all your minds. The boy who died was my son."

"Yes A.P. he was the biological father but I raised him and he carried my name. Tyrese Robert Ruffin. I don’t blame AP for not really caring cuz him and I both found out recently who the biological father was."

“AP met my son for the first time yest when my son was already in coma. I was here today when we pulled the plug, not him. He was happily practicing and has no problem playing on Sunday."

"So yea this isn’t all out yet but I’m sick of the poor AP sh*t. He didn’t know or even meet my son. Sorry for the outburst but put yourself in my place.”
