Music: {allcanada} Krueger built impressive resume in Europe

MTP $20 offMTP $20 offMTP $20 offMTP $20 offMTP $20 off

Although new Edmonton Oilers head coach Ralph Krueger has a limited body of work in the NHL, the 52-year-old forged the reputation as one of the most astute coaches in European and international hockey prior to serving on Tom Renney's staff in Edmonton the last two seasons. A native of Winnipeg with dual Canadian and German citizenship, Krueger spent two decades playing and coaching in Europe before joining the Oilers in 2010.

Under Krueger, a once directionless Swiss program found a team-wide identity. On a team that boasted little in the way of explosive offensive talent, Krueger instilled an often-airtight defensive system that took advantage of the team's assets: above-average goaltending and numerous smooth-skating and defensively aware players on his roster.

"I think Ralph is a very good coach," current St. Louis Blues head coach Ken Hitchcock told NHL.com in 2010. "You can see it the way he gets his teams prepared to play and the way they play with patience and discipline. That doesn't happen by accident."

During Krueger's long tenure as the head coach of Team Switzerland (1997-98 to 2009-10) he turned the Swiss national team from an afterthought on the international hockey scene into a team capable of pulling upsets against favored teams.

Krueger's first major tournament as Swiss bench boss was the 1998 World Championship, held in Basel and Zurich. To the delight of the home crowds, the underdog host nation tied favored Slovakia (1-1) and stunned Russia with a 4-2 upset in the medal-round qualification phase. Switzerland advanced to the semifinals before ultimately losing to the Czech Republic in the bronze medal game.

The fourth-place finish was the highest in Krueger's international career. However, his most notable coaching successes came in the 2006 and 2010 Olympics. In the Turin Games, the Swiss stunned the hockey world in back-to-back games by defeating the Czech Republic, 3-2, and then shutting out Canada, 2-0. The Swiss finished sixth.

Four years later in Vancouver, the Swiss were highly competitive in the preliminary round. Once again, Krueger's team gave Canada all it could handle, but ultimately lost via shootout to the eventual gold medalists. In the medal round quarterfinals, Team Switzerland battled Team USA hard but was unable to find the net in a 2-0 loss.

While Krueger is a demanding coach, he was also highly respected by his Swiss players. For his part, the coach took pride in their advancement and in the slow but steady growth of the program at all levels from the mid-1990s to the present day.

"These players have come a long way to be able to compete at this level," Krueger told NHL.com following his final game behind the Swiss bench.

Now that he is in charge of the Oilers, Krueger faces a somewhat opposite challenge to the one he tackled in his later years in Switzerland. His Edmonton roster is filled with explosive young offensive talents (No. 1 picks Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and rookie Nail Yakupov among them), but is need of defensive improvement. However, given that he has spent the last two seasons as an associate coach, Krueger brings instant familiarity with the roster that a candidate hired from the outside might lack.

As a player, Krueger realized from a young age that the NHL would not be in the cards. Unselected in the NHL Draft following a brief but successful WHL stint as a right wing with Calgary Wranglers, a 20-year-old Krueger headed to West Germany to play in the Bundesliga (the forerunner to the current-day DEL).

In a playing career that spanned most of the 1980s, Krueger became a versatile star in the West German league; not only was he a high scoring forward, but he played on the blue line when needed. Twice, Krueger played for Team West Germany at the IIHF World Championship. Over his later years, he served as a playing assistant coach for German minor league team EV Duisburg.

Krueger formally retired as an active player in 1992, accepting his first coaching job as the head coach of Austrian team VEU Feldkirch in what was then known as the Alpenliga (later disbanded and subsequently reorganized several times into the current-day EBEL). He spent six years coaching in Feldkirch, slowly molding the club into a squad that would earn a spot in the European Champions League in 1997-98. The lightly regarded team ended up embarrassing an unmotivated Dynamo Moscow team in the finals to capture the championship.

Thereafter, Krueger accepted the job with Team Switzerland. Building the Swiss program remained his sole hockey focus for the next 13 years, apart from a stretch in which he concurrently served as a scouting consultant for the Carolina Hurricanes. When Renney and the Oilers offered Krueger his first full-fledged NHL position two years ago, he jumped at the chance.

Krueger, who founded a motivational speaking company and authored an autobiographical self-help book, has gained the reputation for being a coach who emphasizes can-do thinking to his players and pays great attention to detail at practice. While he was unafraid to delegate responsibilities to assistant coaches, Krueger became known for remaining closely involved in all facets of his team's system.

These qualities ultimately convinced Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini that Krueger was the right man to succeed Renney and try to elevate the young Edmonton team to the next level.

"When I think of Ralph, I think of someone who has immense information, Tambellini told the team's official website. "That's vast experience with regards to professional hockey overseas as well as right here as an associate coach. When I watched that work with our group, knowing we have players from all over the world, I think his ability to communicate and think of tactics that work for different people is incredible. This is a big thing for us. I know Ralph and his family are extremely excited. This is a big step in his career but he deserves it, and we're very excited about it."

The new Edmonton coach's son, Daniel Krueger, has acquired his father's passion for international hockey. Born in Switzerland and a member of Team Germany at the most recent World Championship, Daniel played last season in the AHL for the Charlotte Checkers. A Cornell University graduate, Daniel was drafted by Carolina in the seventh round (No. 213) of the 2006 draft. The defenseman played one season in the Swiss National League for SC Bern and represented both the German junior and senior national teams before returning to North America to play in the AHL.

Panguite: Ancient mineral newly discovered

Study of a 1969 fireball meteorite has unearthed a new mineral, named panguite. This mineral was likely around when the solar system formed, billions of years ago.?

By Jeanna Bryner,?LiveScience / June 26, 2012

The new mineral, panguite, occurring with the scadium-rich silicate called davisite was found embedded in a piece of the Allende meteorite. Scientist believe the newly discovered mineral formed when the solar system was in its infancy.

A fireball that tears across the sky is not just a one-time skywatching event ? it can reap scientific dividends long afterward. In fact, one that lit up Mexico's skies in 1969 scattered thousands of meteorite bits across the northern Mexico state of Chihuahua. And now, decades later, that meteorite, named Allende, has divulged a new mineral called panguite.

Panguite is believed to be among?the oldest minerals in the solar system, which is about 4.5 billion years old. Panguite belongs to a class of refractory minerals that could have formed only under the extreme temperatures and conditions present in the infant solar system.

The name of the titanium dioxide mineral, which has been approved by the International Mineralogical Association, honors Pan Gu, said in Chinese mythology to be the first living being who created the world by separating yin from yang (forming the earth and sky). [Infographic: The Science of Meteorites]

"Panguite is an especially exciting discovery since it is not only a new mineral, but also a material previously unknown to science," study researcher Chi Ma, a senior scientist at Caltech, said in a statement.

Until now, panguite had neither been seen in nature nor created in a lab. "It's brand-new to science," Ma told LiveScience in an interview.

The scientists used a scanning-electron microscope to view the panguite within a so-called ultra-refractory inclusion embedded within the meteorite. Inclusions are the minerals that get trapped inside meteorites as they are forming. The ultra-refractory type includes minerals that can resist high temperatures and other conditions in extreme environments, such as those thought to exist as our solar system was forming.

High-tech lab analyses revealed panguite's chemical composition and crystal structure, which Ma said is new, and as such, could be explored for novel engineering materials.

The Allende meteorite, where the mineral was hidden, is the largest of a class of carbonaceous chondrites found on Earth. Chondrites are?primitive meteorites?that scientists think were remnants shed from the original building blocks of planets. Most meteorites found on Earth fit into this group. (When meteors hit the ground they are called meteorites.)

Before they reach terra firma, most meteorites are fragments of asteroids (space rocks that travel through the solar system), while others are mere cosmic dust shed by comets.?Rare meteorites?are impact debris from the surfaces of the moon and Mars. The Allende meteorite likely came from?the asteroid belt?between Mars and Jupiter, scientists say.

Studying panguite and other components of the Allende meteorite are essential for understanding the origins of the solar system, Ma said. In fact, Ma's team has discovered nine new minerals, including panguite, in the Allende space rock.

The new mineral is detailed in the July issue of the journal American Mineralogist.

SongFic[June] "What is real - just a dream"

I can't be
Losing sleep over this
No I can't
And now I cannot stop pacing

Her feet were begging her to sit down, but the anxiety that fueled her would not relent. Jaqlyn was crashing again, and this time no comfort would come from the voices in her head.

Give me a few hours
I'll have this all sorted out
If my mind would just stop racing

There was so much momentum to her thoughts, one turned to the next which turned to the next. It was endless and cycling, she slid down against the wall in her ship. There was silence all around her and the echoes of her former selves faded into the pausing of her heartbeats. Now her hands were trembling, denying her the ability to simply slip into rest.

Cause I cannot stand still
I can't be this unsturdy
This cannot be happening

How many times had she flirted with the edge of sanity? How close had she come to the verge of what she now let herself fall into?

This is over my head
But underneath my feet

Breathe, Jaq. In an out. It was simple yet oh so challenging...For with each breath out she felt how empty her body was, and with each breath in, she re-committed herself to living.

Cause by tomorrow morning I'll have this thing beat
And everything will be back to the way that it was
I wish that it was just that easy

One does not simply sub come to their subconscious' desires, they are undermined by them. Every day that she had lied to herself and said that she was fine, that everything would be okay, was just one more reason for her psyche to collapse. In a city with so many people, it was a marvel that she managed to feel so alone. The pit she was clawing at the sides of was one she had dug herself. Living under the crippling fear of rejection, she drew herself away from instances in which she might be rejected. One by one her friends turned away from her, not because they wanted to, but because Jaq gave them no reason to stay.

Cause I'm waiting for tonight
Then waiting for tomorrow
And I'm somewhere in between
What is real
Just a dream

Jaqlyn lifted her trembling hands to clutch at her temples, fingers going back into the onyx strands that capped her head. She was so frightened by her current state and yet she couldn't flee from it. Staying here, wallowing in this misery, that is what she assigned herself to endure. She wasn't worth rescuing, after all.
Would you catch me if I fall out of what I fell in

Don't be surprised if I collapse down at your feet again
I don't want to run away from this
I know that I just don't need this

Would no one come for her? Who was left? Acquaintances? Could she not be her own champion? Surely not. Not when she couldn't string two logical statements together.

Cause I cannot stand still
I can't be this unsturdy
This cannot be happening

A swallow was pushed hard down her throat as she took in a pill. Like candy, she took in another tablet and another, crowding her tight throat with the drugs. This would help, yes...Numb it all away.

Cause I'm waiting for tonight
Then waiting for tomorrow
And I'm somewhere in between
What is real
Just a dream

There would be no end to it. Tomorrow wouldn't come until she could exist in today. The trembling took over her whole form as she slowly curled on the metal floor of her empty ship. No one would find her here and the fallacies of her mental state would play out as a dream for her.

What is real
Just a dream

University of Va. board restores ousted president

By msnbc.com staff and news services

The University of Virginia reinstated its president Tuesday just over three weeks after ousting her amid outcry from faculty, donors and students.

The 15-member Board of Visitors voted unanimously to reinstate President Teresa Sullivan during a brief meeting, after a motion from a former university rector, according to a university press release.

Outside the meeting, faculty, students and others had organized a demonstration to show support for Sullivan, the university?s eighth president and first female leader.

?I want to partner with you in bringing about what?s best for the university,? Sullivan, 62, said after reinstatement.

University Rector Helen Dragas, who was central in the initial move to oust the president, apologized for actions that sparked the controversy and pledged that she will work with Sullivan to help the university emerge stronger than before, according to a university press release.

?The situation became enormously dramatized and emotionally charged,? Dragas told the group before the vote was taken. ?I sincerely apologize for the way this was presented and you deserve better. I believe real progress is more possible than ever now.??

The vote to reinstate the president came after 17 tumultuous days that began with the board?s sudden announcement June 10 that they had accepted Sullivan?s resignation midway through a five-year contract.

U.Va officials said that Sullivan would step down in August, citing concerns for state and federal funding, declining faculty compensation and accountability for academic quality and productivity.

?Yet in the face of these challenges, the University still lacks an updated strategic plan,? Dragas wrote in statement to the board last week. ?We deserve better ? the rapid development of a plan that includes goals, costs, sources of funds, timelines and individual accountability.?

Sullivan's unexpected ouster triggered complaints about the board's explanation and brought a groundswell of support for her.

Watch the most-viewed videos on msnbc.com

Sullivan defended her performance at a board meeting last week, citing initiatives she had taken, including hiring a new provost and chief operating officer and adopting a new budget model that decentralizes financial planning.

Gov. Bob McDonnell, who appointed half of the board members, had warned Friday that he would seek the resignations of all the members if the group failed to resolve the controversy. As the meeting opened Tuesday, Dragas said the decision of the board would be definitive on the matter.

The board on Monday named McIntyre School of Commerce Dean Carl Zeithaml as interim president. Zeithaml said he agreed to take the interim post because he wanted to move the university in a ?very positive way? but ?did not agree with the decision to remove? Sullivan.

After Tuesday?s meeting of the board, member W. Heywood Fralin acknowledged missteps had been made.

?It is my opinion that everyone agrees the process was flawed,? he said. ?It can never be repeated when important decisions are being made.?

Fralin said he also disagreed with Sullivan?s resignation in the first place.
