Epilepsy Foundation fundraiser Sunday

Organizers invite the public to participate in the 13th annual Sharon?s Ride.Run.Walk for Epilepsy at DeAnza Cove in Mission Bay on Sunday.

The event raises funds for the free programs and services provided by the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County, and increases public awareness of the brain disorder while reducing the stigma of seizures that it can cause.

The fundraiser is the largest epilepsy awareness walk/ride in the United States and 2,500 participants raised $180,000 last year, spokeswoman Hannah Williams said. This year?s goal is to raise $210,000.

The event includes a 15-mile bike ride beginning at 8:45 a.m. and a 5K walk/run beginning at 9:30 a.m. Day-of-event registration is from 7:30 to 9 a.m at De Anza Cove, 3000 E. Mission Bay Drive in Pacific Beach.

For advance registration or for information, go to www.epilepsysandiego.org or call (619) 296-0161.

Advance registration is $25 for adults and $10 for kids age 7 and older. Event day registration is $35 for adults and $15 for kids.

A free barbecue lunch will be provided by Phil?s BBQ restaurant; Pat & Oscar?s restaurant will provide salad and breadsticks.

Sharon?s Ride was created to honor the memory of Sharon Rosenfeld, a nurse and teacher who worked to better the lives of people with epilepsy.

The Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County was founded in 1954 and funds research, education and free services for the estimated 30,000 people in San Diego with seizure disorders and their families.

The foundation?s services include individual and family counseling; support groups; career and vocational counseling; individual advocacy; summer camps; parent network; seminars for employers; a speakers bureau; and classroom presentations.
